The Confined Arts is a platform to illustrate and showcase the talents and creative voices of currently and formerly incarcerated artists. This platform provides an outlet for artists to express their voice through the visual and performing arts, poetry, and music as a means to abolish the inhumane narratives and socially degrading stigmas that are used to describe the past experiences and limit the futures of individuals impacted by incarceration. The TCA platform is also open to those artists who work in or around jails and prisons, as well as those who have been impacted by mass incarceration through a friend or family member.
TCA has a 3-part mission:
Changing Perceptions: The Need for a new narrative
The question should no longer be “why were you incarcerated?” It should be “what lead to your incarceration, who are you now, who do you want to become?” By focusing attention on these questions, The Confined Arts will create a new narrative directly through the creative voices of our artists: through our canvas, through our music, through our poetry, through our theatre, and through our performance. There is a tremendous need to change the perceptions of men and women like myself who have been convicted of a crime in the past. Equally important is the healing power through the Arts: it changes the audience and the artist. The public needs to be educated, laws need to change, and the perspectives of those voting in new laws need to be shifted in a different direction in order for real change to be made.
